Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) is the main international gateway serving Padang and the entire West Sumatra province of Indonesia. It is located in Ketaping, Padang Pariaman Regency, about 23 km northwest of Padang city center.

The airport commenced operations in 2005, replacing the old Tabing Airport, and is named after the Minangkabau ethnic group, the indigenous population of the region. Today, PDG functions as the principal airport for both domestic and international connections linking West Sumatra with key cities across Indonesia as well as regional capitals in Southeast Asia.

Facilities

Minangkabau International Airport has a single terminal building that handles both domestic and international flights. The terminal’s design incorporates traditional Minangkabau architectural elements, such as the curved roof reminiscent of the regional rumah gadang style. Inside, the airport features check‑in counters, baggage handling systems, and ticketing offices. Retail shops, cafés, restaurants, and duty‑free outlets provide food, drink, and shopping options for travelers.

Free Wi‑Fi is accessible throughout the terminal, and financial services such as ATMs and currency exchange counters are available. Passenger comfort is supported by lounges, seating areas, prayer rooms, and facilities designed to assist travelers with special needs. Parking facilities and easy access points for taxis and car rentals are provided outside the terminal.

Airlines

A range of domestic and international carriers operate at Minangkabau International Airport. Major Indonesian airlines, including Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Citilink, Batik Air, and AirAsia, provide flights to domestic destinations such as Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya, and Bali. International services connect Padang with regional hubs including Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Penang, and these routes are typically operated by carriers such as AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines.

Transportation

Travelers can reach downtown Padang and surrounding areas by taxi, bus, and rail connections. Metered taxis operate from designated stands outside the terminal, and affordable airport shuttle buses offer direct service into the city center. A dedicated airport railway link connects Minangkabau International Airport with nearby stations such as Duku, providing a convenient rail alternative for passengers heading into Padang.

Minangkabau International Airport continues to develop its infrastructure, aiming to improve passenger experience and support increasing travel demand for both leisure and business traffic. It remains a vital hub for connectivity in western Indonesia, linking West Sumatra with domestic and international destinations.
