Kualanamu International Airport

Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) is the primary international gateway serving Medan and the broader North Sumatra region of Indonesia, located about 23 km east of downtown Medan in Deli Serdang Regency.

Opened in 2013 to replace the older Polonia Airport, Kualanamu has grown into one of Indonesia’s busiest airports, acting as a key regional hub for both domestic and international travel.

Facilities

KNO features a modern passenger terminal designed to handle both arrivals and departures with a wide range of traveler amenities. Facilities include check‑in counters, immigration and customs areas, baggage claim, information desks, and lounges. Free Wi‑Fi is available throughout the terminal, and passengers can access ATMs, currency exchange counters, and retail outlets including duty‑free shops.

A variety of food and beverage options are offered, from cafés and fast‑food outlets to local Indonesian cuisine. Prayer rooms and designated smoking areas are also available, and services such as lost and found, baggage trolleys, and airline ticket counters are provided to assist travelers.

Kualanamu International Airport is served by a mix of full‑service and low‑cost carriers, including Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Air Group, Batik Air, AirAsia, and international airlines such as Singapore Airlines. Destinations cover major Indonesian cities and regional hubs like Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and beyond, with a growing network of international routes linking Sumatra to Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Transportation

Travelers can reach Medan city center by taxi, private car, or airport shuttle services; the airport is also connected by rail to the city, offering a convenient option for passengers heading into Medan. Ground transportation services, including ride‑hailing app pickups and local buses, provide additional connectivity for onward travel throughout North Sumatra.
