The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Departure Hall is on Level 5 (top level) of the Main Terminal Building (MTB), and it is caters to both domestic and international departures.

There are a total of 216 check-in counters along six check-in islands, identified by alphabets A to M (excluding I). For tour groups, check-in counters are available at the Ground Level of MTB.

Most airlines check-in counters in KLIA open at least 3 hours before flight and some also offer early and online check-in. Passengers are encourage to check-in at least 2 hours before the departure time. Advance check-in as early as eight hours ahead of scheduled time of departure is also provided.

Some international departures are from the Contact Pier while Satellite Building (Satellite A) caters solely to international departures. The MTB is linked, by an automated train shuttle - Aerotrain, with the four-armed Satellite Building where international passengers boarding to their flights.

To speed up immigration clearance for departing passengers, there are 61 counters, and for arriving passengers, they can move rapidly through 69 immigration counters, 16 transfer counters and 32 customs checkpoint counters as well as retrieve their baggage from one of 12 carousels (10 for international passengers and 2 for domestic passengers).

Step by Step Departure Guides

1. Pack all your luggage, including your hand carried luggage, according to permitted weight, dimension and security guidelines.

2. When you arrive at the airport, refer to the Flight Information Display Screens for your airline's check-in row information.

3. Approach the check-in counter with your travel documents (air ticket or booking confirmation, valid passport and visa if applicable) and check-in baggage if any.

4. Checked and confirmed that you are issued with the correct boarding passes and that your travel documents are in order before leaving the check-in counter.

5. Enter the Departure Hall and enjoy the airports facilities like dining and duty free shopping (for international flights only).

As check-in operations and requirements vary by Airlines, do check with the airline representative or the ground handling agent for more information.

International Departures

- Passengers proceed through the international departure concourse.

- If you have yet to check-in your luggage, do so at this level.

- Take the escalator down to the mezzanine level a floor below and go through immigration.

- If your boarding gate is GATE A or GATE B, head towards the international gate lounges at the mezzanine level of the Contact Pier.

- If your flight departs from the Satellite Building (GATE C), you must board the Aerotrain at the mezzanine level to reach Satellite Building.

- Go to your relevant boarding gate at the Satellite Building to await your flight.

Domestic Departures

- If passengers are coming from the MTB departure level kerbside, they will notice doors labeled for domestic and international passengers. Enter the circular doors for domestic departures and you will be at the domestic departure concourse.

- If you have yet to check-in your luggage at the closed car park, there are bus lay-bys at the closed car park or group check-in bus station at MTB ground level, you can check-in your luggage at this level.

- Take the escalator down to the arrival level (Level 3)

- Take the link bridge to the domestic concourse to the arrival level Contact Pier and go to your relevant gate lounge to await your flight.

Baggage Allowance

Most airlines allow a 20 kg allowance for economy class fare. Excess baggage charges are applicable if your baggage exceeds this weight. If your baggage is over-sized, check it in at the counter identified for this purpose at the end of the check-in lanes.

Alternatively, you could choose to airfreight your excess baggage separately at a lower rate. Check with your airlines for further information.

Departure Gates

Only passengers with boarding passes are allowed into the departure area. Please present your boarding pass to the security personnel at the entrance of the departure area, before proceeding to Immigration Control. In the interest of security, only passengers with valid boarding passes will be allowed into specific departure lounges. Present your boarding pass at the entrance of the departure lounge. You are advised to proceed to the departure lounge at least 30 minutes before departure time.

Complimentary luggage trolleys are available within the MTB. At the Covered Car Park, trolleys can be found at specific nests on all floors.
